Lori Newton

APBP Board of Directors Candidate Statement

Lori Newton
Executive Director
Bike Windsor Essex / The Bike Kitchen

Board Nominations 2024 Lori Newton

Please briefly describe your current position and how your work relates to the bicycle/pedestrian field:
I have been a cycling (and pedestrian) advocate for almost 15 years. In 2016 I organized a cycling conference in Windsor with speakers from across Canada and the US. Also that year, I founded the Windsor Bike Kitchen, our region’s only non-profit community bike shop providing support for those who rely on bicycles for their daily transportation including a DIY space and workshops in bike mechanics. We also provide the only Can-Bike cycling education across the region including bike safety rodeos for kids, on bike training for adults, and programs for New Canadians and migrant greenhouse workers. We run bike valets at festivals across the region and lead bike rides and tours. I sat on the board and then chaired the Share the Road Coalition, advocating for cycling infrastructure and education provincially.

Why do you want to serve on the APBP Board of Directors? What do you hope to gain over the term of your Board Membership?
I wish to share my passion for cycling and protecting vulnerable road users with professionals in the field. I believe advocates bring an important perspective to the sector that complements the important work done by engineers and planners.

Please describe your goals for APBP and how your leadership on the Board will benefit the association.
I believe the APBP conference is a tremendous opportunity for professionals and advocates to share experiences and best practices and I enjoyed participating on the planning committee for the Detroit conference. I believe that my work in the non-profit sector and with marginalized communities has made me aware of the inequity built into our streets. My professional career has been in communications, a skill that can be valuable to a Board.
